Canadian Honeysuckle

11

Latin name: Lonicera canadensis

Canadian Honeysuckle

This shrub, 90 to 150 cm tall, has a long, slender trunk. It grows in cool woodlands and along stream banks.

Its thin, opposite, oval leaves are fringed with hairs. They are green on both sides. Its flowers are bell-shaped, yellow or yellowish-green, sometimes even pink. They grow in pairs at the end of a long stalk.

Its flowers are used to make syrup and even wine, if one has the patience to harvest enough. The fruits of related species are edible, and it is possible that its own are as well. However, they are acidic and generally purgative, even emetic.

Did you know? Canadian honeysuckle is considered a symbol of fidelity and the month of May.
