This beautiful cornflower blooms from June to August, an undeniable asset in the vegetable garden, where it attracts numerous bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Besides their appeal in the garden or in a vase, the pretty edible flowers decorate plates and salads. A blue food dye can also be obtained from its florets.
An infusion of cornflower blossoms helps relieve constipation and, as a gargle, treats irritated gums and ulcers.
This annual plant prefers full sun but tolerates some shade. Very adaptable, it grows in well-drained soils, even very poor ones, and tolerates drought. Apart from the occasional aphid, it is not known to suffer from any serious insect or disease problems, and deer leave it alone.
Also, the cornflower is THE plant that's easy on the eyes. It is known to soothe dry skin and reduce the appearance of dark circles. Cornflower can even be infused in hot water and applied as a damp compress to the eyelids.
