Vinegar (Sumac)

11

Latin name: Rhus Typhina

Vinegar (Sumac)

This type of sumac (staghorn sumac) is a small flowering tree species in the Anacardiaceae family, native to eastern North America. It is found mainly in southeastern Canada, from Quebec to the Gaspé Peninsula.

It even resembles an exotic tree. However, the fruits are edible, and Indigenous peoples have consumed them for centuries.

Sumac is an ancient medicinal plant. Modern studies have shown that sumac has antimicrobial properties. This is probably one of the reasons why sumac was used in the past to soothe sore throats.

It is also sold as a spice in some countries. In fact, it is primarily the small hairs on the fruits that are consumed; they have a vinegary, lemony taste. Staghorn sumac is delicious in lemonade, with fish, and with chicken.
