Latin name: Perovskia atriplicifolia

Perovskia

In the large mint family (Lamiaceae), Perovskia is a relative of sage, resembling it with its aromatic foliage and long summer bloom. Some Perovskia species are even commonly called 'Russian sage'. This small shrub reaches a height of around 120 cm at full bloom and a width of almost as much after two or three years.

Perovskia thrives in sunny locations, making it a perfect addition to flowerbeds. It grows beautifully alongside shrubs, roses, and perennials, blending visually with a wide variety of plants. The azure blue of its flower spikes adds a welcome touch of freshness to summer scenes. The silvery-grey of its foliage provides a beautiful backdrop for neighboring plants. It gently captures the light and softens compositions by tempering bright, contrasting colors or creating a harmonious blend with pastel shades. The plant bends gracefully under the influence of rain and wind without detracting from its beauty.

Welcoming a Perovskia into your garden means investing in a spectacle throughout the four seasons. From mid-spring to early autumn, the shrub is in bloom. The numerous flowers, ranging from pale blue to violet-blue depending on the variety, form tiny tubes and are grouped in long, airy spikes. They remain decorative, even after fading, until the end of autumn. The deciduous foliage, with its silvery-grey color, evokes ash. It is finely cut and releases a spicy sage fragrance when crushed. This fragrant plant, however, has no culinary or aromatic uses. When the branches lose their leaves, they remain decorative all winter long with their unusual whiteness.

In addition to its landscaping appeal, the Perovskia possesses qualities that will satisfy today's gardener. This sun-loving plant thrives both in the ground and in pots. It is drought-tolerant, salt-spray resistant, tolerates occasional missed waterings, and is even pollution-resistant. It flourishes in a wide variety of climates: by the sea, in the mountains, and in city gardens, where its naturally robust nature eliminates the need for any treatments. Maintenance is minimal; a quick trim at the end of winter takes only a few seconds. A plant to enjoy without any worries!
